Wild Horses

A few miles past the county line, before the city limits of Craig, close to the Yampa River and the Union Pacific train tracks the wild horses and iron horses will come together.

Whether traveling east or west on US Highway 40 looking south you can see the spot. Presently two old train cars (a caboose and a freight car), and an out of place signal light sit waiting. Across the oxbow sits an empty, flat peninsula willing and waiting for activity.

• The depot will be moved from town, placed on a solid foundation near the two sections of track and restored to its 1916 appearance.


• The oxbow will be dredged to make it deeper, screens placed on the culverts to prevent mingling of the stocker fish and the spotted leopard frog that will inhabit the front and rear halves respectively.


• A bridge across the water will be built, along with a parking lot between the bridge entrance and the station.


• A handicapped accessible fishing pier will be built for young children and those with difficulty getting to the river to try casting a line.
• The other side of the bridge will have picnic tables with barbeque pits, and a large covered gazebo.
• A handicapped accessible trail meanders around the area guiding visitors to kiosks and interactive outdoor displays that share the history, people, and stories of this area.
• Sitting on an outcropping high above the water on the west side is a life size bronze statue of Spirit of Sand Wash, a stallion watchfull of his mares and young below heading for a drink. He intently stares at another life size bronze stallion with his mares approaching the same water from the other side. (A snapshot in time of life a few miles down the road in the wild).

A lasting, educational and inspirational tribute to the wild horses, the indians, the cattlemen, the settlers, and the iron horses. All who brought life to this area many years ago,and those who continue giving life and stability to this beautiful landscape.

Because of its low population Moffat County is still considered a 'frontier'. Few know of this rich history, few have experienced this unique and vast northwest corner of Colorado. We hope to preserve and share this land with those not as fortunate to be able to live in a place that is both modern and wild at the same time.
